we have a brick fireplace on one wall of our living room and it's pretty, but there used to be a wood burning stove hooked up to it and now that we've taken it out I would like to do something decorative with the opening but I'm not sure what to do.
Clean and paint the fireplace a contrasting color (if you want it to be a focal point in the living room) or a like color if you want it to fade into the wall. Get some tall candle holders, some medium ones and some smaller ones. Then put in the candles and on those romantic evenings, you just light them up. Or you can use holiday decorations and remove the candles. Use your imagination and have fun!!
i have this crazy vision in my head but i have not seen it and maybe it already exists. i am thinking of making my indoor fireplace connect so it also serves as a fireplace out doors …. does that make sense? is that even possible? in other words is there a way i can create a small openning in my wall through the fire place so that the fireplace connects into my pation ….. if it already exists can you provide me with the proper term and some pictures if possible.
thanks
yes you can!
I certainly wouldn't leave a big hole in the wall and put a screen over it. You will have to alter the existing fireplace so the opening is big enough to put a whole sealed unit into.
The easiest to install is a heat-n-glo twilight model. There is a fixed glass on both sides and the outside meets the same standards as a window.
see it here: http://www.heatnglo-lifestyle.com/products/fireplaces/twilight.asp
you can also put in your zip code to find a local dealer. if you don't have any luck or want to see more options contact me through my website www.american-fireplaces.com
good luck!

Do a Yahoo search under wood fireplace surrounds. A bunch of different professional websites will pop up where you can get ideas. Here's one website to get you started:

If you're going to build this on your own, try checking out the Sunset books. You can buy them in the bigger hardware stores, bookstores and borrow them from the library. Here's their website:

I purchased a firebox to install to create an outdoor gas fireplace on my wooden deck, but I am having trouble figuring out how to design the exterior of the fireplace (to cover the metal box part). The firebox will be on top of the wooden deck. I like the look of rock, but don't know how great an idea that is on top of a wooden deck? The deck is covered, but not enclosed, if that makes a difference. Any ideas or suggestions?
rock would be fine but you may have a weight problem. manufactured stone is about half the weight and looks real. it goes on piece by piece with mortar so it's really hard to tell the difference, but it's fairly simple to install. check out Arrowhead or Coronodo stone.
Also, is the firebox/logs you purchased listed for outdoor use? if not you may have a rust problem
Being covered helps but they are not designed to withstand normal humidity/condensation that comes with being exposed to the open air.
We found the perfect home -but it does not have the woodburning fireplace that I've always wanted. Gas, electric will not do. There is a florida room in the back of the home… brick masonry foundation and windows. I figured I knock a hole in it and install a woodburner. Feasible? If so, how much should I budget for it? Who should I get to do the work for me, what kind of professional?
I am a general contractor in California. A pot bellied wood burning stove installed in your average 2000 sq. ft. house in CA wood be about $3,000.00. A real brick fireplace would start at $10,000.00 and go up from there. These are CA prices I don't know Florida prices. A general contractor preferably to get the job done, because they will take into consideration anything else that you might need to change to accommodate your new fireplace. A masonry contractor will only do what his trade entails.
i need good sites with pic's?
www.heatnglo.com click on modern collection. Also search for max blanc designs or SCAN. Both are fairly expensive, though. Good luck!
