I have a fireplace with old stone on it, and want to take that off and build a floor to ceiling fireplace, maybe using tiles (ceramic). Does anyone have any ideas or pictures of their own of something that's not cheap, but not overly expensive either?

I have searched google, and only get the old style mantel fireplace images.

we have a marble and wood fireplace. It's pretty. I don't think it was expensive, but it wasn't cheap either.

I've been reviewing decorating sites to try and come up with some ideas on how to decorate my fireplace mantle/hearth. Most pictures show light colored wooden fireplaces - not much with dark brick. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'd get a nice mantle clock, a couple of tall candle sticks to put on either side and maybe a low growing dense plant.

Well I know that I don't want to burn regular wood, I hate the smell, and I don't want to smoke up my house, walls, etc.

I think I need to buy a gas log, but I've never used my fireplace in five years of owning my home. Theres a gas gauge, with a piece sticking out that looks like you screw something on to it, and I have a key beside the fireplace to turn on the gas. But thats all I know. Oh yeah, there's a rack to place wood? And a long silver piece with holes in it. I tried screwing it on to the area that needs to be screwed but it didn't fit.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

It sounds like you have a "log-lighter." This is a gas appliance used to light real-wood fires. you stack real wood in it, and then turn on the gas to assist in lighting the fire.

Since you don't want to use real wood, you'll probably want to contact a local fireplace seller. The good news is that you already have gas in the fireplace, it should be cheaper than starting from scratch.

So I've just moved into my new apartment and the fireplace has become a decorating conundrum. There is no mantle, brick work or stonework on the wall. It is just the fire place and then a white flat paint wall all the way up to the vaulted ceiling. Also it is it's own little wall section, a three or four foot diagonal wall in the corner of the livingroom. I want to make this little space pop without doing too much damage since this is an apartment. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

CLASSIC - Big mirror with candle sconces on right and left (reflects the light)

ZEN - lightweight fabric wall hanging - easier to hang than a mirror - just go get any fabric at the store, wrap around a dowel (like a mop handle - easy to get at the hardware store, and hang from ribbon or wire.

MODERN - go to the art store, buy blank canvas and do your own color block art - you don't have to be an artist. Search the Web for artists like Mondrian, Mark Rothko or Ellsworth Kelly for modernist inspiration
