I know to use paper, kindling, build it up, etc. but it won't stay lit!

In winter, cold air builds in the chimney pipe. First light a page of newspaper and set it up in the flue to warm the pipe. Then crumble some papers under loose kindling. Wait til the kindling is burning well, then add 2-3 split logs. Leave room for air as fire needs airflow. Of course, make certain the flue is open. If the chimney hasn't been cleaned, get a chimney sweep to do that as a chimney fire is a major danger.

If the room is large, you could do a corner fireplace and it would be cozy, but it does eat up lots of space. Also, you have to consider the traffic pattern in the room, so you dont' have people tripping over the hearth.

anybody know any good books or websites wher i can see photos or get plans

You could run a search on ebay. There are several books out on outdoor kitchens as well books on working with brick. If that's not an option right now check out Amazon.com, write down the author and title and take the list to the library. If the books are not on the shelf they may be able to borrow them from other libraries.

Classic Flame 45 inch Built-In Insert Electric Fireplace - On Sale & Free Shipping!

The 45 inch “Built-In” or “Builders Box” electric fireplace insert is designed to be professionally installed in a permanant structure like an actual fireplace or wall cut out. This 45 inch Built-In unit offers a 42 inch wide view of realistic flames and log embers. This view is 12 inches wider than the 33 inch Built-In, and 6 inches wider than the 39 inch Built In models. The Built-In electric fireplace insert produces energy efficient heat, is environmentally friendly, and may be used with or without heat for year-round enjoyment. The 45 inch Built-In electric fireplace insert shares similar features with the 33 inch Mantel insert, but there are differences between these two kinds of electric fireplace units. Unlike the Mantel Insert, the Built-In …- Should be hardwired into home’s electrical system.- Should be installed by a contractor or electrician.- Includes a flip down front panel for easy access to service the unit.- Requires separate purchase of thermostat.- Offers two heat output functions: 4,600 BTUs (heats 400 square feet) or 9,200 BTUs (800+ square feet).- Has a 3-prong plug to be hard-wired in 120v or 240v outlet. The Built-In electric fireplace insert is more expensive than the Mantel Insert, but don’t make the mistake of cutting corners. If you plan to seal the Mantel Insert in a permanant structure, you will not be able to gain access to the back of the Mantel Insert when its time to service the unit. The Mantel Insert can only be serviced through the back. The Built-In is serviced through the front via a flip down front panel. In addition to a 45 inch Built-In, we offer this same unit in two smaller sizes: 33 and 39 inches.

im only 13 and i really want to build a fire

how can i do it quickly and easily

My friend made one by digging a large hole with dirt and than building bricks around the circle….you could use big rocks too .It is nice and as long as it isn't close to anything that will catch fire it will work…just add wood and light…but never leave it unattended for safety ..
