How do I build a fire in the fireplace?

I know to use paper, kindling, build it up, etc. but it won't stay lit!

In winter, cold air builds in the chimney pipe. First light a page of newspaper and set it up in the flue to warm the pipe. Then crumble some papers under loose kindling. Wait til the kindling is burning well, then add 2-3 split logs. Leave room for air as fire needs airflow. Of course, make certain the flue is open. If the chimney hasn't been cleaned, get a chimney sweep to do that as a chimney fire is a major danger.

Throw a little karsin or however you spell that onto the wood.

I used to build fires outside at the Lake of the Ozarks when I was younger; my grandpa taught me, but I doubt it's the same process…1)create a "teepee" out of the wood, very sturdy, so it makes a form similar to that of a pyramid. 2)use paper, small sticks, whatever kindling, and stuff it gently between a few of the logs(to where it's centered in the pyramid, resting against a log and still poking out so you can light it). 3) light the kindling, and keep adding to and trying until pyramid catches fire. 4)add to pyramid periodically until you want it to go out
