If the room is large, you could do a corner fireplace and it would be cozy, but it does eat up lots of space. Also, you have to consider the traffic pattern in the room, so you dont' have people tripping over the hearth.
We are planning to build a midwestern home and adding a built in corner fireplace. Good idea or bad?

I find corner fireplaces can sometimes limit your furniture arrangement possibilities, especially if the room is more narrow (rectangle) than square. This nice thing is that you are building from scratch, so you can decide. I think that it is very important to design a new home with all of you furniture placement in mind. So this room may be a family room, you think…is there going to be a T.V and how does that fit in with the fireplace idea. other than that I think that esthetically, yes corner fireplaces can look nice, if you are asking specifically if it goes with the Midwestern style, I have seen it done.

Well, my opinion is that fireplaces should have been phased out with the advent of electricity and motorized vehicles, they don't put out much heat, and most usually lose more energy than they provide in heat. So I would suggest a soapstone stove–attractive models are available, and they put out real heat, and the stove does not take up as much space. A cast iron stove would be an alternative, some have large windows where you can watch the fire if you like that sort of thing.
